Ontario is strengthening the province’s bail system with new measures that take effect August 17, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to improve public safety and strengthen accountability within the justice system. These changes are designed to improve bail compliance, strengthen the collection of forfeited bail payments, and help keep violent and repeat offenders off Ontario’s streets.
The new measures will require cash security deposits to be paid within two business days of release, improve surety verification requirements, and enhance the province’s ability to collect unpaid bail debts. Ontario is also upgrading digital tools and information systems, including the creation of a surety database to better track compliance and streamline oversight.
Together, these measures will help close gaps in the bail system, strengthen accountability, and provide the justice system with additional tools to protect communities across Ontario.
