Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we honour Survivors of the Indian Residential School System, remember the children who never returned home, and reflect on the lasting impacts that continue to be felt by Indigenous families and communities across Canada.
This day allows all Ontarians to learn about and reflect on the history and legacy of Residential Schools and to honour those affected by them. Ontario has committed $144.5 million to support the identification, investigation, protection, and commemoration of burial sites at former Residential Schools, including $20 million announced in the 2026-27 Budget.
Ontario is also investing $7 million through the Indian Residential School Community Engagement Fund to support community-led healing, commemoration, and initiatives that honour missing children, Survivors, families, and communities affected by the Residential School System.
As we mark this day, we remember those who were lost, honour Survivors and their families, and reaffirm the importance of truth, education, healing, and reconciliation.
