Ontario Investing $55.8 Million to Open the First Medical School for Family Doctors

Our government is investing $55.8 million to support the planning and operations of the York University School of Medicine as part of our plan to connect everyone in Ontario with primary care close to home. As Ontario’s first medical school primarily focused on training family doctors, it will help strengthen access to primary care and address the growing demand for health-care services across the province.

Set to open in Fall 2028, the York University School of Medicine will support 240 undergraduate seats and 293 postgraduate seats annually once fully operational. This investment will create more opportunities for Ontario students to pursue rewarding health-care careers while helping build a stronger pipeline of highly skilled physicians.

This funding is part of our government’s commitment to the largest expansion of medical education in more than a decade, including the establishment of medical schools at York University and Toronto Metropolitan University. By investing in the next generation of family doctors, we are strengthening Ontario’s health-care workforce and helping ensure more families can access the care they need, when and where they need it.
